Hearth & Haven was founded by Kim, a chaplain, Zen priest and former monk, and Lacey, a mom, plant specialist and retired military intelligence officer. Both of our life paths have instilled a deep appreciation for precision, beauty, and the power of intentional practice. At Tassajara Zen Center, Kim immersed herself in the art of Japanese gardening, learning to cultivate balance and tranquility through the landscape. Meanwhile, Lacey’s passion for plants was born in Austin, Texas, where she spent many years in plant design and care.
When they met, their shared love for plants and design naturally intertwined. Together, they craft terrariums and plant arrangements that reflect the principles of Zen — simplicity, connection, and the delicate balance of nature. Their work is a meditation on the interconnectedness of all things, a reminder that even a dew drop can reflect the entire moon in the sky.
In the Mountains and Rivers Sutra, Eihei Dogen reminds us that nature is not separate from our everyday life; each stone, leaf, and stream is a teacher. This teaching informs everything we create at Hearth & Haven. Each piece is crafted with intention, serving as a vessel for nature’s quiet wisdom, bringing a touch of stillness and beauty into everyday spaces.
At Hearth & Haven, the goal is simple: to connect people to the natural world and to the calm, enduring rhythms of life. Through carefully selected plants, thoughtfully designed terrariums, and custom plant arrangements, Kim and Lacey share a piece of our world’s wild beauty — a moment of stillness that can be brought into any home.
